Our History
ACID started its journey after the intervention in Rangabandh village located amidst the dense forest of Choupahari Jungle
.
The members, with assistance from Composite and Integrated Scheme, took the initiative to create sustainable development of the "Santhal" tribes
who reside amidst the deep forest of the jungle, under Illambazar Block, Birbhum District. It is within 21 kms of distance from Bolpur
(Santiniketan). The marginalized and vulnerable inhabitants of the village were deprived of minimum amenities necessary for their survival.
Mostly comprised of land less labours living below the poverty line, the villagers used to earn their livelihood by working as daily wage labours
during the harvest season (one crop per year).
The programme includes Child Education, Health Check-up and Health education, Need Based Supply of Nutritious Food, Formation of Self Help Groups, Plantation of Fruit and Vegetable trees, Livestock Distribution (goat and chicken), Small Scale Economic Activities like leaf plate making, kitchen gardening, encouragement of small savings, awareness generation programme, development of their traditional animal husbandry, ensuring preservation of their traditional culture.
The programme has been planned and organized in such a way so that it can be replicated in other tribal villages located
within the radius of Choupahari jungle
in the future times. This program was supported by Sir Ratan Tata Trust.
From different activities and experiences, it had been observed that poor and vulnerable groups of people, especially women and girls of the area, lacked knowledge in the following areas--
- Family planning.
- Pregnancy care and delivery.
- Control of sexually transmitted diseases.
- Control and prevention diseases transmitted by dirt and smears.
- Prevention and treatment of malnutrition.
- Treatment and prevention of acute respiratory infections, etc.
These are indicative of the fact that there is a need to bring sustainable improvement in the awareness level and health condition of poor and vulnerable communities in Illambazar block through implementation of various programmes such as Reproductive Child Health (RCH) ).
Hand washing project in 157 schools in Nanoor block:
